Why is sun exposure after laser hair removal dangerous?

Many customers ask themselves:
"Why can't I go out in the sun after laser hair removal?"

Already 10 minutes of sun directly after the treatment can cause dark pigment spots.
The reason: the skin is irritated and sensitive after laser treatment - the skin's protective system is weakened, making it more susceptible to irritation. Sunburn, pigmentation disorders and irritation will.

Natural & artificial sun - What is dangerous?

Many people think that only real sunlight is problematic - but even artificial tan can damage the skin after laser treatment:

Natural sun (UV-A & UV-B):

Causes sunburn, pigmentation spots and skin ageing. After the laser, even low levels of UV radiation can cause damage.

Solariums

Even stronger than natural sun - even short sessions can cause burns and permanent stains.

Self-tanner

Do not contain UV radiation, but color the skin artificially. This makes it harder for the laser to recognize the hair root → Uneven results.

Golden rule

No sun, no tanning beds, no self-tanner - Before and after laser hair removal.

Solar intensity worldwide

Solar power is generated by the UV index (UVI) measured:

Europe

Spring/Autumn: UVI 2-4
Summer: UVI 6-8 (up to 9 in southern Europe)

Asia (e.g. Thailand, Dubai, India)

All year round UVI 9-12 → very high load

Africa / South America / Australia

Frequently above UVI 12 → extreme UV radiation

After the laser, the skin is more sensitive to light - Trips to sunny regions should be postponed or planned with consistent sun protection.

💫 Different skin types, different risks

After the Fitzpatrick scale (I-VI):

  • Type I - very bright: burns immediately → very high risk
  • Type II - bright: burns easily → high risk
  • Type III - light to medium: moderate risk
  • Type IV - olive-colored: lower risk
  • Type V-VI - dark brown to black: rarely sunburned, but risk of Hyperpigmentation

No matter what skin type - after the laser the skin barrier is weakened and needs protection.
